Abstract: It has been proved by the Liquid quenching technique and the observation through SEM that compacted/vermicular graphite is generated from the deteriorated spherical graphite which existed in the early stage of solidification. After adding phosphorus into the Fe-C-Si alloy, it is verified that the growth tip compacted/vermicular graphite is connected with the liquid channels during growth process. Similar result was obtained from the experiment with Ni-C-P alloy. Analyses show that these liquid channels have an obvious effect on the growth of compacted/vermicular graphite. Finally, some efforts are made to study the crystallization and solidification of alloy with differential also thermal analysis. According to the results and analyses, the growth model of compacted/vermicular graphite is offered.
