Abstract: An abundance of acoustic emission (AE) is emitted in metal cutting process. And it is a new technique of great potentialities for on-line monitoring chip states using AE signal analysis. In this paper, experiments on turning have been carried out in order to reveal the relationship between chip states and AE signals in metal cutting process. From these studies one can conclude that the pulses of AE envelope waveform (DC) indicate chip-breaking state accurately; chip forms and unusual chip state can actually be shown by the waveform of weighted AE count rate and DC signal averages, the formation of different chip form is carelated with the corresponding AE waveform.
