Abstract: A kind of high pressure air spray (HPAS) assistant power supply system is developed in order to improve the performance of turbo-charged diesel engine under low-speed and high-load operations. The control and measuring system of HPAS is discussed. By applying this system the power output increases by 6.9 percent at 800 r·min–1 full-load operation and the smoke opacity decreases by 50 percent under 1 000 r·min–1 full-load operation. Effects of HPAS on real time responding characteristics of air intake, power output and smoke opacity under low-speed full-load operations are analyzed and concluded as follows. The intake air pressure and quantity increases while the assistant energy exists. The extent of performance improvement ranges with engine speed. The turbulence resulted from the assistant energy is able to lead the engine into a better quasi-steady state under specific operations.
