Abstract: A smart structure is defined as a structural system whose geometric configuration or inherent characteristics can be modified in response to environmental changes. When a tunble product based on electrorhological behavior with the sensory and control capabilities is implemented, the result is a smart structure. Polarimetric, single mode and integrating fiber optic sensors have certain advantages over conventional sensors so they can be used as optimal sensing system/elements in an electrorheological structure. The progress is reviewed and some potential in the future is discussed.
