Abstract: The continuous chips prepared for manufacturing the ultra thin steel sheet, which were obtained during cutting with a tensile force exerted on the as-cut chips, were investigated. The SEM morphology of the chips presented shear front-lamellar structure, which was basically the same as the conventional cutting chips. But, the relationship between lamella width and cutting depth of the continuous chips was inverse to the results of conventional cutting hip at the low cutting depth. The curves of microstrain and microhardness as thickness of them a s well as the curve of lamella width as thickness of them had the similar shape. It was found that the three curves had the minima at the same coordinates of cutting depth. It was considered that the suitable tensile stress decreased amount of the deformation and the deformation became well-distributed during the formation of ultra thin sheet by cutting. The suitable stress could be aid to the formation of the sheet and be played the rule through changing the shear angle of the cutting.
