Abstract: Based on the analyses of the vibration characteristics of the spindle/tool-holder/tool system and the cutting processes, the mechanism of the tool flank wear influenced by the system’s mechanical vibration is studied. The experimental modal analysis method is used to obtain the system’s modal parameters. The vibration locus of the tool tip is analyzed and also the behavior of the change of the effective end-relief angle along the locus with the cutting time. We found out the relationship of the modal parameters and the tool flank wear. Cutting tests were done for the tool flank wear influenced by the modal parameters. Testing results prove that in high-speed milling hard materials the higher the value of the dynamic stiffness and the product of the modal damping and natural frequency, the less the tool flank wear influenced by the system’s vibration, and vice versa.
