ON THE THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION OF HYDROCARBONS WITH AIR

Abstract: From an analysis of the composition of the products of combustion of hydrocarbons with air, simple equations are obtained which express the thermodynamic properties of the products of combustion of any percentage of theoretical fuel in terms of those of any two other percentages of theoretical fuel. To facilitate their application, a table of coefficients for use with an available table of the thermodynamic properties of air and that of the stoichiometric products, and a similar table of coefficients for use with the air table and a 50%-theoreticalfuel products table are prepared. These tables are given for percentages of theoretical fuel varying from zero to 100%, at intervals of 1%. By the use of these tables, the specific heats and their ratios at a number of temperatures for pro ducts of combustion of a range of fuel-air ratios varying from zero to 100% theoretical fuel at intervals of 10% are computed and presented in tabular form. The simple equations obtained in the analysis are also used to obtain two equations which determine in a single step the air-fuel ratio required to produce products of combustion at a certain limited temperature in the main combustion chamber of a gas turbine or of a ram-jet engine and in the after-burner of a turbo-jet engine or in the "reheat" chamber of a gas-turbine power plant, respectively. The use of the equations obtained and the tables prepared is illustrated with a number of examples.
