Abstract: Literature on the suppression of chatter induced in machining process is reviewed. On account of their resources and features, the strategies are divided into two categories, i.e. the control of machine tool structure and the control of cutting process, and the former is further divided into active control, semi-active control and passive control methods. The key achievements under each category are summarized and the recent advances are introduced. There still exist theoretical constraints related to cutting chatter control. The emergence of some new techniques and new materials promote the rapid development of this subject, whereas those ideas and materials themselves also face a number of development obstacles urgently needing breaking through. The developing methods of intelligent control based on smart materials and intelligent control schemes such as fuzzy control and artificial neural networks, are also denoted considering the time-varying and nonlinear features of the machining process. The general development status is evaluated in the conclusion.
