Abstract: According to the measurements of stabilization phenomena of austenite as well as the relationship between the amounts of retained austenite and deformation of tools, a new quenching method: quenching to a temperature below M-point followed by holding at a higher temperature within definite time, is established. It has been shown in practical heat treatment that by adopting this new non-deformation quenching method not only the duration of quenching is shorten, but also the amount of deformation of tools during quenching can be reduced to minimum.
