Abstract: Light weight metals have been widely used in aeronautics, astronautics, energy, automobile, architecture, packaging and transportation, because of their high strength to weight ratio. However, lightweight metals usually have relatively low high temperature strength. Joining them with ceramics to fabricate the composite structure is an effective approach to overcome these disadvantages. In this paper, we reviewed the development of the brazing and diffusion bonding of the commonly used lightweight metals including titanium alloys, aluminium alloys, zirconium alloys and TiAl intermetallic with ceramics such as Al2O3, ZrO2, SiC, SiO2, Si3N4, MAX and ceramic matrix composites including SiO2f/SiO2 and Cf/SiC. The commonly used approaches to alleviate the residual stress in the ceramic/ metal joint including the interlayer method, composite brazing filler method and the interface designing are introduced. The selection principles of the materials for the interlayer and the strengthening phases in composite brazing filler are reviewed. The developing trend of the ceramic/ lightweight metal joining is discussed.
