Abstract: Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films, with perfect friction and wear properties, are a kind of extremely splendid potential solid lubricant materials. However, its tribology performance is affected by many factors, including innate factors and external factors. Considerable differences in tribological property of DLC films will exist when facing different innate factors and external factors. This unfavorable nature limits the development of its application area and makes it difficult to understand the tribological behavior and friction mechanism of DLC films. Three types of current friction mechanism of DLC films are summarized, which contain transfer film theory, graphitization of sliding interface theory and dangling bonds passivated by chemical adsorption theory. Based on that, the effects of each innate factors and external factors on tribological property of DLC films and the mechanisms of these effects are generally analyzed. In the future, it is possible to conduct in-depth study on the tribological property of DLC films from basic theories and relevant technologies.
