Abstract: The monolithic plates are impacted by one stage gas gun in order to reveal the perforation characteristic and mechanism, the influence of the ballistic resistance when then structure impacted by external objects, and also the experimental results are studied by theoretical model. Especially, a factor is used to revise the thickness of target in the theoretical model according to the analyses of experimental results. Based on the experimental data, the theoretical studies are carried out to study the ballistic performance of monolithic steel targets of various thicknesses impacted by projectiles with ogival, blunt and hemispherical nose shape, and the influence of thickness of plates and nose shape of projectiles on the ballistic limit velocities and failure models is revealed. In general, good agreement is obtained between the predictions from analytical model and the experimental results. The results of analytical model indicate that the ballistic limit velocities firstly increase then decrease with the increase of caliber-radius-head(CRH). Moreover, the ballistic limit velocities of targets increase with the increase of thickness in a certain range.
