Abstract: Triple-wire gas indirect arc welding(TW-GIA) is a new type of arc welding technology. The arc discharge path is formed between three electrodes and the connection method of electrode polarity has a significant influence on the welding process. In order to reveal the characteristics of the triple-wire gas indirect arc welding medium and thick plate welding process under different polarity connections, the butt welding tests are carried out on 8 mm Q345 low carbon steel plates respectively under the conditions of main wire connected to the anode(MSA) or the cathod polarity(MSC). The results show that the entire stage stability under MSA is good while the welding stage stability under MSC decreased due to the occur of short-circuit explosions, resulting in the generation of pores on the bead surface and local unfused defects of the joint. As the welding current increases, both of the range of the arc column area is uniform and the electron temperature of arc column area under MSA is higher than that MSC's.
