Detection and Evaluation of Welded Joints of Steel Structures with Defects

Abstract: Due to the welding heat process, the welded joints tend to have deterioration of structural properties, large welding residual stress, stress concentration and various welding defects. The evaluation of the safety of the welded joints with defects has important engineering application value for ensuring the safe use of the welded structure. Based on the existing methods for detecting defects in defective joints and the method of regularized characterization of defects according to BS 7910, the level of failure assessment diagram in BS 7910 and the types of stresses and correction factors involved in the determination of the coordinates of the evaluation points of defective joints are introduced. Reference is provided for the selection of defect detection methods, the processing of regularized characterization of defects, the selection of failure assessment diagram level, and the determination of the evaluation point coordinates for the actual evaluation of the welded joints by BS 7910.
