Abstract: The transverse crack has different crack modes due to the external loads of the rotating shaft, the influence of crack mode should be considered when using propagation characteristics of the elastic wave to detect transverse crack. The local flexibility coefficients of the crack are deduced for different crack modes, and then the transfer matrix with different crack modes is established. An experimental rig for studying the transverse crack is built, the crack mode of which is analyzed theoretically, and the influence of crack depths on the propagation characteristics of elastic waves in the rotating shaft is analyzed qualitatively. The experimental results verify the result of the theoretical analysis of the crack mode, and the crack depth mainly affects the band width and center frequency of the stop band of the elastic waves. The conclusions can provide a reference for the selection of the crack mode of crack in the rotating shaft with variable section and also a method for the detection of an transverse crack.
