Design and Experiment of Self-contained 6 km Profiler for Turbulence Measurement

Abstract: At present, the measurement range of most turbulent profilers is shallow at 1Km. In order to measurements of turbulence in the deep ocean, research the evolution mechanism of deep ocean dynamic process and energy dissipation process, develop the self-contained 6 km profiler. Based on the measurement principle of the airfoil shear flow probe, analyzed the key technology to constrain the design of the 6Km profiler, and the stable hydrodynamic layout design of the profile, lightweight mechanical design with pressure resistance of 6Km, and the analysis and control design of descending velocity are carried out. The measurement sensor integrates the double PNS airfoil shear flow probes and FP07 fast temperature sensor, adopt the modular design idea to complete the self-contained measurement hardware system, realizing the synchronous and high-speed measurement of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation in the two dimensions and heat dissipation of deep ocean. Through the performance test, the profiler can meet the application of 6Km, and the linear adjustable range of descending velocity is 0.4~0.9 m/s, which verifies the feasibility of the design of profiler; Sea trials, and compared with MSS90, the trend of turbulent shear is the same as that of MSS90, The spectrum of profile turbulent shear follows the Nasmyth spectrum closely up to cut-off cycles per meter, the turbulent energy dissipation rate is the same order of magnitude as MSS90 in same depth, which proves the accuracy of the self-contained 6Km profiler for turbulence measurement.
