Abstract: To reveal the effect of surface waviness on the stability of hydrodynamic journal bearing systems, a dynamic model of hydrodynamic journal bearing system with the surface waviness error is established. The nonlinear dynamic analysis and calculation method of the hydrodynamic journal bearing systems with the surface waviness is proposed, the effects of different forms of surface waviness such as circumferential surface waviness, axial surface waviness and combined surface waviness on the stability of the system are investigated. The result shows that the existence of the surface waviness makes the oil film of system to wave and increases the energy loss of the system. Especially, when S<0.2, the effect of surface waviness on the energy loss of the system is most obvious. However, the existence of the surface waviness is not all harmful. The surface waviness will promote the stability and the bearing capacity of the system in a certain extent. The greater the corrugation amplitude of surface waveness is, the more obvious the influence level is. Moreover, different forms of surface waviness affect the system characteristics differently. The axial surface waviness promotes the bearing capacity of the system more than the circumferential surface waviness and combined surface waviness. However, the circumferential surface waviness has a more pronounced effect on system stability and energy loss. When S>0.5 axial surface waviness has less effect on stability, but it has an adverse effect on the energy loss of the system. When S at 0.06-0.20, the effect of surface waviness on the energy loss of the system is most obvious; the greater the corrugation amplitude is, the more obvious the influence level is. Moreover, the axial surface waviness promotes the bearing capacity of the system more than the circumferential surface waviness and combined surface waviness. however, the circumferential surface waviness has a more pronounced effect on system stability and energy loss. When S>0.5 axial surface waviness has less effect on stability.
