Abstract: Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), invented by Zhonglin WANG's group in 2012, is a new energy technology by coupling of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction between mechanical interfaces. With advantages of light weight, flexible and material diversity, the TENG can be used for harvesting human kinetic and environmental micromechanical energy, which is a new approach for not only micro power generation but also mechanical sensing. The mechanism, characteristics and theoretical model of TENG are elaborated. Several micro/nano-structure fabrication methods are reviewed for enhancing the performances of TENG. A series of triboelectric microsensors, microactuators, and self-powered microsystems are summarized, as well as the application researches in flexible mechanics, intelligent equipment and wireless sensor network. The existing problems of triboelectric self-powered microsystems are discussed and the future trends are also expected.
