Radial Chucking Stiffness Characteristics Analysis of Wedge Type Power Chuck

Abstract: Based on the clarification of chucking rigidity’s influence on the chucking accuracy, the characteristic of chucking rigidity is researched systematically. Putting the contact state of chucking arc and workpiece, the influence of clamping force, chucking length, and bending force on the radial chucking rigidity is analyzed. The investigation shows that, when the jaw contacts the workpiece along its full clamping length, the variation in apparent radial chucking stiffness with respect to the direction of the bending force can be eliminated. However when the bending force is larger than some critical value, the radial chucking rigidity is reduced, and the variation of that can be observed again. Then the method for improving the characteristic of chucking rigidity and critical bending force is introduced, which combine the enlargement of clamping force and chucking length, turning the top jaw reasonably. Furthermore, a four jaw chuck is effective to be used to eliminate the variation in radial chucking stiffness.
