Abstract: Remanufacturing is the ultimate form of recycling. However, the uncertainties in quality and quantity of cores in reactive remanufacturing hinder the industrialization of remanufacturing. To meet with the issues, the concept of proactive remanufacturing is put forward. Based on the relationship between remanufacturing and the lifecycle of products, theories of proactive remanufacturing are expounded. Besides, the relevant concepts in proactive remanufacturing are presented, and the principal characters of proactive remanufacturing are concluded. Then, in order to realize proactive remanufacturing more reasonably, design for proactive remanufacturing, which aims at optimizing the relationship of components, is discussed. The structure of design theories and methods for proactive remanufacturing is established. The fundamental theories and basic process of design for proactive remanufacturing are presented. Meanwhile, the concepts of life matching, structural functionally gradient and residual strength, which respectively correspond to the design of product level, component level and structure level, are proposed. Finally, designs for proactive remanufacturing are demonstrated by taking the system of crankshaft and connecting rod for an example. The results show that, the design theories and methods are valid and feasible.

Key words: life matching, proactive remanufacturing, residual strength, structural functionally gradient
