Abstract: There is modulation in the spectrum of planetary gear sets’ vibration signal, which is similar to those of fixed-shaft gear sets’ fault signal. In order to explore the vibration mechanism of planetary gear sets, the characteristics of planetary gear sets vibration is further studied during the power transmission. Experiments and simulation results demonstrated how the vibration is influenced by meshing gear-pair in the transmission path of the planetary gear sets with a fixed ring gear. Meanwhile, considering the variation of meshing force in cyclic periods during the transmission, a mathematical model is established to describe the mechanism. Two types of planetary gear sets with different structures are investigated by simulation analyses to reveal the reason why the modulation sidebands exhibited. Experiments on a wind turbine planetary gearbox validate the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed model.
