Abstract: Monolithic and three-layered targets are normally impacted by ogival-nosed projectiles with the help of a gas gun, and also the residual velocity versus the initial velocity curves of the projectiles are constructed and ballistic limit velocities. The influence of combination configuration of target on the ballistic characteristic is investigated, including the ballistic resistance and failure models. The penetration process of metal plates impacted by rod projectiles is studied with numerical simulation code ABAQUS/EXPLICIT, and the validation of models and parameters of materials is proved by comparing the experiment results with numerical simulations. It reveals that the effect of configuration of targets. Results of the finite element analysis are compared with experiments and a good agreement between the two is found. The dominant failure models change from bulging to petaling when using multi-layered targets instead of monolithic target.
