Plate, sheet and strip products of steel and non-ferrous metals are widely used in various fields of the national economy. Shape control is the key technology in the high precision production of flat rolling metals and has been being paid close attention to by researchers. Domestic and foreign scholars have been developing and improving different evaluation methods in the studies and analyses of the shape control performance of strip rolling mills. Their scientific nature determines whether they are effective tools in the design, research and upgrades of shape control technologies and equipment, as well as the setup of rolling rules and integrated strategies of flatness and crown control. These methods and indicators are expatiated from such aspects as geometry precision, steadiness of flatness control, self-maintenace of roll contour, statistical methods and evaluation software systems. Different methods in every category and their applications are briefly discussed and evaluated. According to the development trends of plate and strip rolling, research directions and problems that deserve attention in future studies are set forth.
